I'm lucky enough to live on Auburn Avenue, one of the more famous streets on Atlanta's northeast side. This area has kept a large amount of its original flavor (the Peacock, a bar where James Brown, Stevie Wonder and others played early in their careers, is still thriving), but is now a major destination site for people from all over the world. Why? Because this was one of the most important men in the last 100 years, straight up. Check out his speeches from your local library. And if you want to see a small symbol of his importance, go the the Peace Center, which spans about two city blocks, and pays homage to this incredible person.Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site 1.7.2001
This has nothing to do with Atlanta, but it's a southeastern original. I've seen more references to this almighty sugar infusion in the past 6 months than I can stand. Must ask the question - if what you took for granted is suddenly loved and desired by many, should you suddenly love it or hate it? QuickHoney: Money 1.5.2001
Hey, look! Another reliable source of media spreading the good word about Blogger. Not only is this good for the Blogger server fund, it shows that tech news sources aren't debasing a company that wants to continually offer a free service. This is the place for those interested in art exhibits that force you to reaffirm what you think "art" is. The Contemporary sponsors and shows everything from massive sculpture to local film projects. Not only is the caliber of envelope-pushing creativity high, but they regularly feature Atlanta-based artists. Now that's what I'm talking about.the contemporary •
The best place to see interesting music rests comfortably in East Atlanta, and has a funny name. Echo LoungeKnown recently for offering Him, Sea and Cake, Isotope 217, and too many others to mention. If you come to Atlanta, you need to get over to Flat Shoals Road (off 1-20 West of downtown) and check this out. Not to mention a bar scene that's better than most. 12.28.2000
Like Mogwai, but they won't release enough albums? Into the Belle and Sebastian thing, but too much candy hurts your teeth? Why not try this: The Delgados Sweet, yet dirty. Addictive like poppies, and poppy indeed. I've loaded a few graphics in place of the photos to come, mainly due to travelling during the holidays. There is a place, however, called Fado's, that serves the best pint of Guinness in Atlanta that I have to laud. How does it register? Ambience - 7.8 - score lowered mainly by the Buckhead client-base. plenty of hard wood and stylized chipped paint to compensate. Food - 8.8 - damn good fish and chips for a winter night. Drinks - 9.4 if you're going for Guinness - it just doesn't get much better than their pour. Beautiful things - 6.8 - interiors are rustic and tough, and so are most of the people. Don't get me wrong. I'm a harsh judge, and the above scores are high in my book. Had a great time, and it felt like winter. Experience is everything. 12.19.2000
Snow does strange things to my moods...I live in the Southeast, for god's sake - we don't have snow here. There are things made beautiful by it, like masses (for us it's masses) of snow twisting around the neon signs of strip joints on cheshire bridge road. There's listening to the sound of it settle on the windshield. It can instill excitement, like the moment I realized it wasn't just another miserable day of wind and rain. It was a miserably cold day with a surreal and foreign landscape suddenly transplanted around me. Food tastes better, and Guinness is on the menu. From my loft I can see the train on its suspended track move slowly through the cold, its lines sharp and shining. No noise, except traces of everyone's stereos when you walk down the hall. No one is going out, and it doesn't seem to matter. |
